The Survivors Club: The Secrets and Science that Could Save Your Life by Ben Sherwood

Here's a club everyone wants to be a member of. It's probably human nature to wonder if you have what it takes to survive in a tumusut, earthquake or economic chaos. This thought-provoking book not only profiles dozens and dozens of people who have done just that, it also gives you a way to grade yourself on your likely survivorship, and tips on how to raise your score.

The three rules of the Survivors Club, according to author Ben Sherwood, are that everyone is a survivor, one person's crisis can't be compared to another's, and people are stronger than they know. Attitude has a lot to do with it. If you see yourself as a survivor, you'll likely be one.

The book takes into account scientific research and true life stories of those who've escaped death narrowly to determine what, exactly, makes people resilient to adversity and how to learn from them. On the website you'll find a quiz that will give you your personal Survivor Type and you'll learn what strengths you have and how to use them in a disaster.

Why The Art of Sustainable Living?

A critical imbalance of food demand and food supply is coming.

This crisis will peak sometime in the next 30 years leaving large groups of people without enough access to food. As populations grow, in developing countries, and food production is affected by a changing weather, the increasing price of oil, dwindling supplies in fish\crops or global debt, demand for food will outstrip supply in greater and greater margins.

You have a choice either become a Grower or a Hoarder. Regardless of how much food you hoard, there is a limit. We have chosen to become a Grower and share our knowledge and experiences with others. We call our program - The Art of Sustainable Living. It is how to grow food and be self-reliant whether you live in an apartment, condo, and house. You do not have to be a farmer.

Humans need to eat, humans are creative, and humans are resourceful. So what does a hungry, resourceful, creative human do? S/he grows a crop, eats what s/he needs, sells or barters the rest for another need.

You can be part of The Art of Sustainable Living

There is no permanent community living at the Center. Some people may camp for long periods of time, but there is no permanent housing. You must provide your own housing, but there are no camping fees. You work for your camping rights.

How can you participate?

1. Attend our fall meeting at Depoe Bay, Oregon. Nov , 2012 There is no cost to attend. There are no fees, dues or costs to be part of the Center.
2. Plan to visit the Center and spend time there.

The Cost?

If you commute - there is no cost. The closest permanent lodging with motels/hotels is located in Newport, Oregon, which is 25 miles away and at the edge of the Pacific Ocean.

Staying at the Center

If you are willing to camp (we have 80 acres and one mile of Siletz River front of camp sites) with your RV, 5th Wheel, Camping Trailer, Tent Trailer, or Tent at one of our primitive sites and work on our projects at least 2 hours per camping day there is no charge. Full RV hook up sites are available for a small fee.

We Teach Hands On Skill Building

Food Self-Reliant lends itself to being caught not taught. By this we mean that one cannot really understand soil and vegetation by merely reading a book. It is the act of listening and sensing that leads to a harmony between the grower and the growing. There are parts of food Self-Reliant where we need to use our minds, but a large part is learning to listen to the plants and to become a part of the living ecosystem. When we participate with nature in this way, there is a sense of belonging that comes to us, and meets deep inner needs.

Freedom Through Teaching Others Self Reliance by Doing

Anticipating long periods of time without commerce. Our Center places a strong emphasis on logistics and resources. Our Center amasses stockpiles of supplies for it own use, for charity, and for barter. Frequently cited key logistics for the Center include long-term storage food, medical supplies, tools, gardening seed, and fuel.

A Sustainable Living Center location include:

1. Light population density
2. Plentiful water
3. Arable soil
4. Good solar exposure for gardening and photovoltaic
5. Situation above any flood plains
6. Diverse and healthy local economy
7. Mild Climate - not too hot - not too cold

Fearing rioting, looting and other unrest, our Center advocates select withdrawn locations that are more than one tank of gasoline away from any major metropolitan region and not in close to major highways or on anticipated "refugee lines of drift."

One of the key goals of a the Center is to be self-sufficient for the duration of the collapse. To that end, plentiful water and arable soil are paramount considerations. But just behind these comes isolated, defensible terrain.

The Center will rely on keeping a well-stocked retreat, and plan to go there "at the 11th hour", as necessary. They keep a bug-out bag handy, and may have a dedicated bug-out vehicle (BOV). This is a vehicle that the owner keeps prepared in the event of the need for an emergency evacuation. Typically a BOV is equipped with a variation on the bug-out bag that includes additional automotive supplies, clothing, food and water.

We favor four wheel drive trucks and SUVs due to their greater off-road abilities. Peaceful Preparers may opt into maintaining an older vehicle since it most likely lacks critical electronic components that would be hard to repair and would not be "fried" by the an electromagnetic pulse.

The Sustainable LivingThe Center

The Center has found such a location. It is 80 acres. We are in the process of developing it. It has a large supply of water, but presently it is pumped by public electric power. We are studying how to convert the water supply to be “off the grid,”

The cleared land is the Oregon Coastal Center's 80 acres. There is one mile of river frontage. The River is 100 feet wide and there is plenty of summer and winter Steelhead and Salmon.
Fishing and swimming holes are plentiful along this stretch of the river. Temperatures at this Center are usually 15 to 20 degrees warmer than in the coastal towns, and it is less windy. The dense forests and surrounding mountains make the Center a lovely place to live and visit.

The Center will have food storage, and water treatment tools. They have prepared themselves psychologically for disasters will be able to help in several ways. They understand their Survivor Talents, Attributes and Gifts. (TAGs) They know and how to use their Survivors TAGs and appreciate the TAGs of others associated with the Safety Center .

1. They're less likely to become refugees or use the time/resources of first responders.

2. Since they ARE prepared for disasters, they can help the people in their immediate area which will lessen the load on first responders and reduce the number of refugees.

3. They help helping themselves and their neighbors, Peaceful Preparers will increase the quality of care for people who DO end up still needing first responder care or to relocate to a refugee Safety Center.

The more Peaceful Preparers that we have, the more stable our families, cities, and the country as a whole will be.
